Alfano Mechanical provides VRF system design, installation, repair and maintenance in NJ for offices, schools, medical buildings, retail and multi-family properties. Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems heat and cool multiple zones from a single outdoor unit, with each space controlled independently.

What Is a VRF System?

A VRF system circulates refrigerant directly to indoor units in each zone, varying the flow to match the load in each space. Heat-recovery VRF systems can heat some zones while cooling others at the same time, moving heat from where it isn’t needed to where it is.

The result is precise comfort control, quiet operation, no large ductwork, and energy savings that are often significant compared with older rooftop or split systems. VRF is especially well suited to buildings with many rooms or mixed uses, and to retrofits where adding ductwork is impractical.

Design and Installation

A VRF system only performs as well as it’s designed and installed. Our installation process includes:

  • Load calculations for each zone to size outdoor and indoor units correctly
  • Equipment selection across major VRF brands, based on your building, not a single manufacturer
  • Refrigerant piping design and installation, including branch selectors and pressure testing
  • Controls integration, from individual zone controllers to central building management
  • Commissioning, startup and owner training

Repair and Maintenance

VRF systems are more complex than conventional HVAC, and many contractors avoid them. Our technicians diagnose VRF fault codes, communication errors, refrigerant leaks, compressor and inverter board failures, and sensor and valve issues.

Regular maintenance keeps a VRF system efficient and catches small problems before they shut down zones. Our VRF maintenance includes filter and coil cleaning, refrigerant and pressure checks, condensate drain service, controls and communication checks, and a written report after each visit. VRF System FAQs

VRF works best in buildings with many zones that need individual control, like offices, schools, hotels, medical offices and apartments. It’s also a strong option for older buildings where new ductwork would be costly or disruptive.

Savings depend on the system being replaced and how the building is used, but VRF typically uses less energy than conventional systems because it runs only as hard as each zone requires. We’ll estimate savings for your building during a consultation.

With regular maintenance, a VRF system typically lasts 15 to 20 years or more.

Yes. We service VRF systems installed by other contractors, including systems that have had ongoing problems.
