How a Heat Pump Works

A heat pump moves heat instead of burning fuel to make it. In winter, it pulls heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside. In summer, it reverses and works like an air conditioner. Because moving heat takes less energy than creating it, a heat pump can deliver two to three units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses.

Heat Pump Installation Options

  • Ducted air-source heat pumps replace a central AC and work with your existing ductwork.
  • Ductless mini split heat pumps serve homes without ducts, additions and single rooms. See ductless systems.
  • Cold-climate heat pumps keep heating efficiently well below freezing.
  • Dual fuel (hybrid) systems pair a heat pump with a gas furnace or boiler for the coldest days. See dual fuel systems.
  • Water source heat pumps for condos, apartments and office buildings. See water source heat pump service.

Do Heat Pumps Work in New Jersey Winters?

Yes. Older heat pumps struggled in deep cold, but today’s cold-climate models keep heating at temperatures well below freezing. For homes that want extra peace of mind on the coldest nights, we design systems with backup heat, either electric heat strips or a gas furnace in a dual fuel setup.

Benefits of a Heat Pump

  • One system for heating and cooling, replacing a furnace and AC or a boiler and window units
  • Lower heating costs than electric baseboard, oil or propane in many homes
  • No combustion, so no carbon monoxide risk from the heat pump itself
  • Possible utility rebates and incentives in New Jersey

Heat Pump Repair and Maintenance

We repair all brands of heat pumps. Common problems include not heating or cooling, ice that won’t clear from the outdoor unit, reversing valve and defrost failures, refrigerant leaks and error codes. Twice-a-year maintenance, before heating and cooling seasons, keeps a heat pump running efficiently all year. See our maintenance plans.
