How a Dual Fuel System Works

On mild days, which make up most of a New Jersey heating season, the heat pump heats your home efficiently with electricity. When temperatures drop below a set point, usually somewhere around freezing, the system switches to your gas furnace or boiler for powerful heat on the coldest days. In summer, the heat pump works as your air conditioner.

The switchover point is set during installation based on your local utility rates and your home, so the system runs on the lower-cost option.

Why Choose Dual Fuel in New Jersey?

  • Lower heating bills. The heat pump handles most of the season at lower cost than burning gas.
  • Reliable heat in deep cold. The furnace or boiler takes over when it’s coldest, so comfort never suffers.
  • Heating and cooling in one upgrade. The heat pump replaces your central AC.
  • Can work with your existing equipment. If your furnace is in good shape and compatible, a heat pump can often be added without replacing it.
  • Possible utility rebates for the heat pump portion.

Is a Dual Fuel System Right for Your Home?

Dual fuel is a strong fit if you have natural gas service and ductwork, your central AC is due for replacement, or you want lower heating bills without giving up gas heat. If your home has no ductwork, a ductless mini split paired with your boiler can deliver similar savings.

Dual Fuel Installation and Service

We size the heat pump and furnace together, install a compatible dual fuel thermostat or control, set the switchover temperature for your utility rates, and test both heating modes before we leave. We also repair and maintain existing dual fuel systems, including thermostat and switchover control problems.

Rebates and Financing

As a PSE&G Trade Ally, we apply PSE&G instant rebates to qualifying heat pumps and high-efficiency furnaces, and eligible PSE&G customers can spread the cost over time with 0% on-bill repayment. We also offer financing through NEIF and JB Financing.

Dual Fuel System FAQs

A regular heat pump uses electric backup heat in very cold weather. A dual fuel system uses a gas furnace or boiler as backup instead, which is usually cheaper to run in New Jersey.

Often, yes, if your furnace is in good condition and compatible. We’ll check during the estimate.
