How a Mini Split Works

Each system has an outdoor unit with the compressor and one or more indoor units that deliver heating and cooling. Refrigerant lines connect them through a small hole in the wall, so installation is quick and minimally disruptive. Indoor units can be wall-mounted, recessed in the ceiling, or floor-standing.

Single-zone systems serve one room. Multi-zone systems connect several indoor units to one outdoor unit, each with its own thermostat. Systems range from about 9,000 to 48,000 BTU, enough for a single room or an entire home.

A mini split only performs as well as it’s installed. We size each zone with a load calculation, place indoor units for even airflow, run and pressure-test refrigerant lines, set up condensate drainage, and make sure the outdoor unit is mounted to handle New Jersey snow and ice.

Mini Split Repair and Maintenance

We repair ductless systems from all brands, including units we didn’t install. Common problems include units not cooling or heating, water leaking from the indoor unit, error codes or blinking lights, refrigerant leaks and frozen coils. Annual maintenance (cleaning filters, coils and blower wheels, checking refrigerant, and clearing drain lines) prevents most of them and keeps indoor units from growing mold.
